Plumbing is a system that very much operates in the shadows. So, when you hear a loud banging or clunking noise as your water flows through the pipes, it's easy to discern that something isn't right. If you hear this sensation, the problem is likely an issue known as water hammer. Learn why you might be dealing with this issue so that you can work to resolve it.

1. Pipes in Need of Replacement

A common reason for water hammer is aged pipes. Many pipes are intended to last the homeowner for years, if not decades; however, if you live in an older home and you're experiencing this issue, the age of the pipes is likely the problem.

As pipes get older, they start to shift, which can cause them to move out of alignment. When this movement occurs, as the water forcefully flows through the pipes, it will bang up against the areas where the pipe may have shifted, which will lead to the disruption you hear.

In addition to being incredibly annoying, old pipes are also more likely to spring a leak, so it's a good idea to think about a replacement. If you live in an older home, have someone check the pipes as soon as possible.

2. Water Pressure

An imbalance of water pressure may also lead to water hammer issues, particularly, if the water pressure level is too high. When you turn on the water, think about the process much like you would the start of a race. As soon as the flag drops, the car's speed off. As soon as you turn on the faucet, the water swiftly makes its way through the pipe.

The higher the pressure rating of the water system, the faster the water will move. If the pressure rating is too high, the water will run through the pipes so fast that it literally slams into the pipe's walls, which can cause the loud noise.

While some people will increase the pressure setting of the water because they think a higher pressure level will provide a better cleaning experience, such as in the washing machine or dishwasher, you can have too much pressure. Have a plumber come out and check your pressure reading to see if it should be lowered.

If you suspect a water hammer issue, it's essential you contact a plumber. Water hammer can cause a number of problems with your plumbing system down the line if you do not correct the problem. Contact a plumbing company like Knights Plumbing & Drain for assistance as soon as possible.
