If you don't think that your thermostat is reading the proper temperature that is in the home or that maybe your furnace isn't working as it should be, get an HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) contractor to come to your home and do an evaluation. There are a lot of common problems that can occur when your thermostat and furnace are aging, and those problems can affect how the two units are communicating together. Talk with your HVAC contractor about these different options for your home's situation.

New Efficient Thermostat

One of the first things you may want to do is replace the thermostat. You can get a thermostat that has the following features:

  • Programmable options so you can have the unit run efficiently and only when needed
  • Wireless control options from a smartphone or tablet
  • Diagnostic scanning options to detect temperature problems in the home

You want a thermostat that will tell you if the temperature in your home is dangerously hot or so cold the pipes may burst, and that you can set on timers for efficient heating.

Heat Placement in the House

The HVAC contractor will look at how the heat is flowing through the house. If the heat vents are open or working better in the area where the thermostat is, then the unit may be detecting that the house is at the proper temperature. Or if the room has bad insulation and windows and is cold, the furnace may be blowing heat unnecessarily. To do this the HVAC professional will look into the vents and follow the heat flow throughout the house.

Furnace Inspection and Sensor Information

You will have to inspect the furnace to see if there are some internal problems that are causing the furnace to run excessively. The contractor will check the sensors and the components in the unit, clean it out and blow out the dust and debris, and check all the pipes and components to see if there are problems that need to be repaired or replaced.

If your heating bills are climbing and you aren't changing how you run the heat or what you set the temperature at, contact the heating contractor that you want to use in your area right away. There are a lot of different ways that you can help to make the house and the furnace more efficient to save on your heating costs.
